Market Update: Sri Lanka Trade Deficit Widens in April
Sri Lanka’s trade deficit widened to USD 889 million in April of 2021 from USD 840 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. Exports soared 189.8 percent from a year earlier to USD 818 million, underpinned by shipments of textiles & garments (461.2 percent), rubber products (154.4 percent), and petroleum products (149.9 percent). Meantime imports surged 52.1 percent to USD 1,707 million, mainly due to a resurgence in purchases of fuel (239.2 percent), machinery & equipment (101.5 percent), textiles & articles thereof (55.5 percent).
