Market Update: Japan Food Prices Down the Most in 4 Months
Food prices in Japan fell by 1.1 percent year-on-year in August 2021, after a 0.6% decline in the prior month. This was the steepest drop in cost of food since April, dragged down by fresh food (-8.8% vs -4.2% in July), fresh vegetables (-18% vs -9.6%), cereals (-1.1% vs -1.5%), and fresh fruits (-2% vs -0.9%). In contrast, there were rises in cost of meats (1% vs -0.2%), oils, fats (0.5% vs -0.3%), alcoholic beverages (0.1% vs flat reading), fish & seafood (2.2% vs 1.7%), cakes & candies (0.9% vs 0.5%), dairy products (0.5% vs 0.2%), beverages (0.4% vs 0.7%), and meals outside the home (0.5% vs 0.5%).
