If you remember a few years ago when Uber and Lyft drivers started demanding benefits and California passed AB5 in 2019. The California Trucking Association appealed and has been fighting it since then with injunctions granted and lawsuits delaying it, until now. An estimated 70k owner operator truckers in California are classified as independent contractors. They had 7 days to cease operations as independent contractors
What this means- owner operators, even if leased on to a large carrier will not be allowed to operate in Cali after next week, this will take 10’s of thousands off the road. A lot of these truckers are responsible for and operate mainly out of the ports. Cali ports are responsible for and move a large percentage of goods. Containers and ships are going to get backed up even more. Fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Cali will be impacted as well
