Today, European leaders were unable to reach an agreement regarding reforms and regulations for the electricity market. Despite comments made by France’s energy minister over the weekend suggesting a possible deal today, discussions will need to continue.

The objective is to prevent the type of sudden price surges that caused disruption in the European economic system in the previous year.

The intention is to establish both ‘contracts for difference’ and extended electricity agreements to ensure consistent pricing, however, some nations are unwilling to enforce CFDs. Adding to this challenge is the fact that Sweden wishes to persist with coal subsidies.
