Market Update: Australian Shares Open Below Record Highs
The ASX 200 fell 18.50 points or 0.25% to 7284 in early deals on Friday, easing from gains of 0.44% in the previous session and trading below record highs as market participants digested a key report suggesting the spike in US consumer prices is temporary, due to the re-opening of the economy and the low base year. Local 10-year bond yields extended fresh 4-month lows to 1.434% while US 10-year rates were at 3-month lows of 1.444%. In local data, new home sales rose by 15.2% month-over-month in May, while the Westpac-Melbourne Institute Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to the lowest in 5 months in June, easing from an 11-year high touched in the previous month.
