Market Update: SENSEX Falls to Near 2-Week Low
The BSE SENSEX lost 198 points or 0.4% to a near two-week low of 52,130 in early trade on Friday and is on track to drop 0.7% weekly, amid the prospects of tighter monetary settings as the US recovery from the pandemic gained traction. In recent data, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week for the first time since April, despite evidence that the economy and the job market are rebounding from the pandemic slump. On the policy front, Reuters said that India had put on hold a proposal to reduce import duties on edible oils as cooking oil prices started to fall after hitting record highs. Regarding the pandemic, the country on Friday saw 62,480 new virus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total caseloads to 29.7 million.
