Market Update: Macau Consumer Prices Fall for 9th Month
Consumer prices in Macau edged down 0.51 percent year-on-year in May of 2021, easing from a 0.64 percent decline in the prior month. It was the ninth consecutive month of deflation, although the second slowest in the current sequence, as prices fell at a softer pace in food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.18 percent vs -0.65 percent in April), as higher fruit prices partly offset losses in pork products; and in communication (-7.63 percent vs -7.70 percent). Downward pressure persisted in recreation & culture (-10.06 percent vs -9.87 percent), attributed to lower charges for package tours. On the other hand, prices kept advancing in transportation (2.32 percent vs 1.26 percent), amid higher airfares; household furnishings & services (2.19 percent vs 2.15 percent), underpinned by rising domestic helper wages; and miscellaneous goods & services (0.71 percent vs 0.78 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched up 0.04 percent, slowing from a 0.18 gain in April. source: Statistics and Census Service, Government of Macao SAR [/s2If]
