***‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ rakes in $108.5M in its domestic opening weekend (2.1x Lightyear’s opening)***

Including Monday’s Independence Day haul, the film’s $123M four-day domestic gross is the highest-grossing July 4th long weekend ever

* ‘Minions’ received a surprise boost at the box office from Gen Z teenagers & a Tik Tok trend known as #[Gentleminions]( https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/06/entertainment/gentleminions-rise-of-gru-tiktok-cec/index.html) (groups of young men showing up to the movie in suits)
* The 5th installment of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise is the origin story of how Gru became a villain and is the sequel to the ‘Minions’ prequel.

***The slow-to-return ‘family demo’ is finally back, but not for ‘Lightyear’***

* ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ just did more business in one weekend **($108.5M**) than ‘Lightyear’ has over its entire 3-week theatrical run **($105.2M**) thanks to the family audience
* Lightyear’s disappointing $51M opening weekend was followed up by -64% drops in the film’s second and third weekends (for context, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is in its 6th frame and has never had a drop more than -**42%**)
* In my June 25 post, I suggested five possible factors behind the Toy Story spinoff’s poor performance:

1. Confusing spinoff
2. Disney+ streaming habits
3. Controversy
4. Crowded competition
5. No Tim Allen or Woody

Whatever the true cause, ‘Lightyear’ is on pace to be **Pixar’s second lowest-grossing theatrical film ever**
