Banks find themselves facing a range of problems, including high interest rates, declining profitability, and an additional worry in the form of credit rating downgrades. The recent downgrade of the US has led ratings agencies to indicate that the cost of addressing these challenges could rise further. In fact, the possibility of a downgrade in the credit rating of the entire banking industry from AA- to A+ has already had a negative impact on US bank stocks.
